RS2 had a good release with few 'game breaking' bugs but lacked content at the start which had an effect on player retention, over time the game deteriorated and more bugs were being introduced into the game than were taken out (we've become accustomed to several 'hot fix' patches to patch the previous patches), and the content being added felt very recycled with a lot of asset reuse and shortcuts being taken. This is how I like to compare it: RO2 was buggy at release but overtime got better with additional content being added which only improved on the reasonable amount of content that came with the game.

There's also hit registration issues still within the game that also can make it frustrating during firefights. Shoot and hit another player and it now takes 3-4 hits to actually kill - making the game lose its authentic and brutal edge.

It has since become more casual with strange squish sounds that play every time you RS2 started off more hardcore than RO2/RS it actually removed some of their more casual features. Overall, I think both games will be played for a good long while but RO2/RS will have the greater legacy. It feels more visceral and the graphics and changes to gameplay can make it much more immersive at times, but it can also be very frustrating to play for people who prefer RO2/RS' slower, more tactical gameplay. RS2 has faster gameplay and the individual soldier is much more powerful than in RO2/RS since assault rifles are the primary weapon of Riflemen this time around. The mechanics and setting of RO2/RS1 make gameplay a little slower and more reliant on teamwork having to use primarily bolt-action rifles slows gameplay down and limits the power of the individual soldier as well as increasing the threat of MGs. Both are going for a more realistic, lethal shooter: minimal hud, realistic ballistics, high damage models, and large maps. I think both games are great and fun to play, but certainly different flavors of the same concept. Beyond that, if I had to choose, having played tons of both, Id go with Rising Storm 2, if only because its newer and going to have a larger player base. The game is older, and doesnt look quite as nice, although its the same basic engine. I've played a ton of both, over 500 hours in RO2/RS and nearly 300 for RS2. RO2 and the first Rising Storm take place in WWII.
